Evolution of prices - postal charges have fallen

Postal charges in Portugal for non-priority and priority letter mail have fallen in real terms over recent years. This is one of the conclusions of analysis carried out by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP) concerning the evolution of postal service prices. The same document also concludes that postal charges in Portugal are significantly lower than average prices in the rest of the European Union.

Priority letter mail charges have fallen by 17.3% in real terms over the period 1992-2000, and non-priority letter mail charges have fallen by 8.7% in real terms over the period 1989-2000. A global weighted index of both types of mail has fallen by 3.2% over the period 1992-2000.

Compared to the rest of the European Union, current postal charges in Portugal are 36.6% below the EU average for non-priority mail and 8.2% the EU average for express mail. Similarly, postal charges for non-priority letter international mail are 8.7% below the EU average.
