Telecommunications sector mergers to be debated at ANACOM conference on 22 September

A spate of recent mergers in the telecommunications sector in several European countries and the challenges these mergers entail will be the focus of the 7th conference to be hosted by ANACOM - Autoridade Nacional de Comunicações: ''Consolidation in the telecommunications sector - trends and new challenges''.

The conference, which will be held on Monday 22 September, will be opened by ANACOM's Chairman, Fátima Barros and will be addressed by the chief economist at the European Commission Directorate General for Competition, Massimo Motta, who will speak about recent decisions on mobile telecommunications mergers in Germany and Ireland.

This will be followed by a panel session to discuss the impacts of mergers, the challenges for regulation and new business models, with participation from António Ferreira Gomes, Chairman of the Board, Autoridade da Concorrência (Portuguese Competition Authority); Kevin O'Brien, Chairperson of Ireland's communications regulator; and Carlo Cambini, Professor at the Florence School of Regulation. The panel will be moderated by ANACOM's Hélder Vasconcelos.

Since this year sees ANACOM celebrating its 25th anniversary, the same conference will bring together the regulator's former chairmen (Luis Nazaré, Álvaro Dâmaso, Pedro Duarte Neves and José Amado da Silva) to share and explain the challenges that have been faced over the course of ICP-ANACOM's 25 year existence. This panel will be moderated by João Confraria, member of ANACOM's Management Board and by Nicolau Santos, deputy director of Portugal's Expresso newspaper.

Participation in the 7th ANACOM conference, to be held at Foundation Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon, is free and open to all interested parties.  Those wishing to attend should register on ANACOM's website (www.anacom.pthttps://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?categoryId=2958).
