Bundled subscription television services report growth


At the end of second quarter 2014 (2Q14) there were about 3.25 million subscribers to the subscription television service in Portugal, 38,200 more subscribers mil (+1.2 percent) than in the previous quarter and 104,800 more subscribers (+3.3 percent) than reported in the same period of 2013.

The growth in subscriber numbers was driven by offers supported over optical fibre (FTTH/B) and xDSL, whose customers have grown in number, versus the previous quarter, by 7.5 and 2.2 percent, respectively. On the other hand, the number of subscribers to the cable television distribution service and satellite service (DTH) fell, respectively, by 0.7 and 1.1 percent over the same period.

At the end of 2Q14, the cable television distribution service represented 42.7 percent of total subscribers, while xDSL accounted for 22.2 percent and DTH 18.2 percent. The weight of FTTH/B continues to increase, now accounting for 16.9 percent of total subscribers.

It is estimated that, at the end of the quarter, about 8 out of every 10 subscription television subscribers received the service as part of a bundle of services (an increase of 3 percent).

Grupo NOS reported the highest share of subscription TV subscribers (45.3 percent), followed by PT Comunicações (41.9 percent), Cabovisão (6.7 percent) and Vodafone (5.9 percent). Vodafone was the provider that added the largest number of subscribers in net terms during the quarter.

At the end of the period being reported, about 18.6 percent of households with subscription TV had access to premium channels (a decrease of 0.9 percentage points from the previous quarter), while 61.6 percent had more than 80 channels (an increase of 12.6 percentage points versus 2Q13).
