Cable television networks reached 800 thousand subscribers

Data compiled by the Instituto das Comunicações de Portugal (ICP) shows that by the end of March, cable television operators had circa 800.000 subscribers. This figure reflects a 26% growth, in relation to March 1999, and is a result of 134 thousand new subscribers.

The country's Central Region continues to top the list in terms of growth rates at a subscriber level: the number of subscribers to the service by 55% over 12 months. Nonetheless, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo is still the most important region, attracting 59% of all clients to these services throughout Portugal. This can be seen in the following table:

At the end of the year's first quarter, cable television networks reached 56% of Portuguese homes. Of the total number of accommodations, 19% were connected to the service at the end of March.

At a level of cabled houses, Lisbon and Vale do Tejo leads the way: over 90% of all cabled houses are found in this region. Nevertheless, the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira have the highest service subscriber rate: an average of 40% on both archipelagos.

In absolute numbers, by the end of last year there were approximately 2.34 million cabled accommodations throughout Portugal, reflecting a 16% growth in relation to the figure for the first quarter of 1999, and a 4% growth in relation to the previous quarter. In absolute terms, these increases correspond to 324 and 85 thousand newly cabled houses, respectively.
