Express mail traffic in Portugal increases 8% in the second quarter


Total traffic from postal services in Portugal comprised approximately 223.2 million items (21.1 postal items per capita) in the second quarter of 2013, 12.6% less than in the previous quarter and 9% less than in 2nd quarter 2012. The reported variations are within the forecast range resulting from the historic trend and estimated seasonal effects.

Express mail traffic comprised 10.3 million items (4.6% of total traffic) and increased 8% over the first quarter and 9.9% compared to the 2nd quarter 2012.

Non-express mail traffic, which makes up the majority of traffic (95.4%) declined by 13.4% compared to the previous quarter and by 9.7% compared to 2nd quarter 2012.  Approximately 92.4% of this traffic is encompassed by the universal service.

Of all items distributed, 96% were destined for the domestic market, while the remaining 4% were destined for other countries.  About 96.2% of postal traffic was comprised of correspondence, direct mail and editorial mail.  Parcels make up 3.8% of total traffic.

Grupo CTT reported a share of 94.9% of total postal traffic, with no other provider reporting a share of total traffic exceeding 1%.

In the express mail segment, alternative providers had more significant market shares, and their combined market share exceeded CTT's share of 28.7%.  Chronopost reported a share of 21.3%, Grupo Rangel reported 14.3% of express mail traffic and General Logistics Systems and Grupo SEUR reported 5.5% each. The remaining operators reported shares below 5%.

In the period being reported, revenues from postal services totalled 164.4 million euros. Approximately 39.3% of revenues were derived from express mail services.
