Public consultation on VoIP


ANACOM launches today a public consultation on the regulatory approach to voice services over IP technology (VoIP), which comprises a proposal for the opening of a new numbering range, at a new level of the National Numbering Plan - "30" - which accommodates the provision of general nomadic services.

The purpose of the present consultation is to ensure that this approach is consistent with the regulation aims provided for in the law, namely with the promotion of competition, the encouragement to the development of innovative, diversified and quality services, the protection of user interest, namely the guarantee of the provision to users of correct, relevant and up-to-date information, and the effective use of numbering resources.

A set of frequently asked questions (FAQs) shall also be published, aiming to clarify the VoIP services in its various aspects.

A 30-working-day time limit has been established for the assessment on the subject by interested parties, thus expiring by 21 December 2005. Contributions shall be submitted, preferably by email, to the following address: gt.voip@anacom.pt. The consultation process having come to an end, replies received shall be publicly available at this website. For this purpose, interested parties shall clearly identify any parts in their replies deemed confidential.
