Sectoral Standardization Body

Under the protocol signed between ANACOM and the Portuguese Quality Institute (Instituto Português da Qualidade) in relation to standardization within the national system of quality management framework, ANACOM is recognized as the Sectoral Standardization Body in the area of communication (telecommunications and post) as well as electromagnetic compatibility.  Within the scope of this activity, a total of 290 standardization consultations were registered during 2005.

The European sectoral standardization bodies involved were ETSI - European Telecommunications Standards Institute, The European Standardization Committee and The European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization. The consultations were carried out with national commerce associations1, public bodies2 and companies3.

The work of The Electrotechnical Commission in the area of cables, wires and wave guides for telecommunication equipment - Electrotechnical Commission 46, represented about 29% of all the Sectoral Standardization consultations carried out in 2005.

The work done in the area of electromagnetic compatibility represented about 53% of the Sectoral Standardization Body's activity, and accordingly it has become evident that national participation needs enhancing through the setting up of an Electrotechnical Commission in this area.

With a view to making the results of this work available and to involve potentially interested parties in this material, a specific area for standardization has been set up on ANACOM's website.

Besides the activities carried out by Sectoral Standardization Body, this area also gives information about the standardization activities directly related to the electronic communication regulatory framework (list of standards develops under articles 17 and 18 of the Framework Directive)
