Public consultation on the ENUM service

ANACOM's determination of 23 February 2006 approved the launch of a public consultation on the ENUM service (Electronic Numbering or Telephone Number Mapping).

Targeted at electronic communications service operators/providers and at users in general, this consultation's aim is to understand the market's readiness for ENUM and to define an action plan for its introduction in Portugal. Specifically, its aim is to collect contributions in order to evaluate ENUM's importance in connection with the following: to operators and service providers and to users in general; the services and applications that might be maximized or additionally offered by service operators, through ENUM, taking into account the regulatory framework, the market's needs and consumers' interests; the administrative management model and the most appropriate and efficient technical solutions for implementing ENUM; and the availability of those actors to make tests and/or for a test period, and its scheduling.

ENUM is a function providing a correspondence between E.164 telephone numbers and the electronic communications applications attached to them. It uses a protocol designed by the work group with the same name, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), and uses a Domain Name System (DNS) architecture. This is an electronic directory service based on the E.164 numbering.

A 40 working day period was set for this consultation, and therefore the deadline for receiving comments is 3 of May 2006. These comments should be preferably sent by e-mail to enum@anacom.pt. Once the consultation procedure is concluded, the proposals received will be released on this website and, thus, interested parties should clearly identify any content regarded as confidential.
