ANACOM authorizes tests for WiMAX

Following a request by BROADNET PORTUGAL, ANACOM authorized this company to perform technical tests to evaluate fixed and nomadic broadband wireless access systems (F&NBWA) of the WiMAX type, in connection with the fixed wireless access (FWA), using a 2X15MHz frequency block between 3443-3457 MHz and 3543-3557 MHz.

This authorization does not imply any commitment, obligation or constraint regarding the future use of WiMAX systems in Portugal, does not bind ANACOM nor gives BROADNET any right, expectation or legally protected interest on the granting of rights of use resulting from the FWA consultation process or from a possible future WiMAX authorization process.

ANACOM is closely following the international debate on the introduction of the WiMAX technology, mainly focusing on technical issues (e.g., technical solutions, spectrum, and standards) and on the regulatory framework, aiming at adopting harmonized solutions. In Portugal, the framework for this technology should take into account the solutions coming out of that debate, particularly in Europe.
