ICT penetration grows in the General Government and Municipalities


UMIC - Agência para a Sociedade do Conhecimento, I.P. (Knowledge Society Agency) released on 9 March data on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by the General Government organizations and Municipalities in 2005.

Collected data shows that all of the General Government organizations and Municipalities have Internet connection - which is broadband in about 73% and 85%, respectively. These results stand for a 38% broadband increase in General Government and a 66% one in Municipalities.

Concerning Internet presence, about nine out of every ten General Government organizations have an Internet site. Of these, 65% provide forms and 36% allow their electronic filling out and delivery.

96% of Municipalities are on the Internet. The most available functions are e-mail for doubts and complaints (91%) and form downloading (70%). Releasing institutional information and promoting tourism and local cultures are among the main reasons given for the creation of sites on the Internet, both standing for 98% of the answers.
