Electronic communications consumer survey

The February 2006 Electronic Communications Consumer Survey is now available. The survey, carried out jointly by ANACOM and Marktest between 17 January and 22 February, focuses, in particular, on analyzing consumer habits in respect to fixed and mobile telephone services.

Of the main results of the survey, the fact that around 60% of Portuguese of homes have a fixed-line telephone is of particular note; of those who didn’t have a fixed-line telephone, 61.2% used a mobile phone instead and 16.5% preferred not to pay a monthly fee.

On the other hand, almost one in five of those who have a fixed telephone use more than one operator, with 49.2% of these using pre-selection to choose the operator. Of the total surveyed, 83.4% said they were clients of PT, while Tele 2 emerged as having the second largest share of clients with 14.8%, followed by Cabovisão with 11.5%.

Overall the majority of fixed-line telephone users considered the quality of the service provided as being good.

When it comes to mobile telephone services, 84.5% of those surveyed had a mobile phone. Free contracts and pre-payment were the preferred contract options, used by around 45.3% and 42.8% of clients respectively. Among the other findings it is worth noting that 19.3% of users said that they had already changed operator at least once. For 34.6% of these it was because most of their contacts were using another operator, while for 33.3% it was because they were not happy with the prices.

Of those surveyed 51% were clients of TMN, 38.7% clients of Vodafone and 19.1% of Optimus. Finally, it was found that the vast majority of those surveyed considered that quality of service provided as being good.

The survey results are based on 2,020 direct and personal interviews with a sample of individuals aged 15 or over, resident in Portugal and the Autonomous regions of Madeira and The Azores, conducted 17 January - 22 February. The sample is considered reflective of and proportional to the population under analysis (8,699,000 individuals), based on the data of latest population census: Census 2001.
