Updated information has been published on the geographic distribution of broadband in Portugal.

According to the figures, at the end of 2005 there were 1,837 public telephone exchanges equipped with DSLAM (digital subscriber line access multiplexer) in continental Portugal. This number represents 98% of the total number of exchanges belonging to PT Comunicações and gives a 44% increase on the previous year. These exchanges are concentrated in the areas of greater Lisbon and Porto, in the northern coastal areas and in the Algarve. In the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores the percentage of exchanges equipped with DSLAM is also high, exceeding 97% and 96% respectively.

Likewise networks for the distribution of broadband by cable modem in continental Portugal are also concentrated in the areas of Greater Lisbon and Porto. In the Autonomous regions, the percentage of cabled households in Madeira exceeds 93%, while in the Azores the figure is 60%.
