Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA)

  1. 1
Does Fixed Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) require radio licensing?

The 5725-5875 MHz frequency band is exempt from radio licensing for the operation of stations of a BFWA network. However, stations must be previously registered with ANACOM. Equipment for this band is required to operate on a basis of non-interference and non-protection in relation to licensed radio networks and stations.  As such, operation of this type of equipment is to be immediately discontinued in the event of non-compliance with the above conditions set out in the National Table of Frequency Allocations (NTFA) or upon any occurrence of interference caused to licensed stations or networks.

  2. 2
How can I register Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) stations in the 5.8 GHz frequency band?

To register stations of a BFWA network, please send a request by email to edge@anacom.ptmailto:edge@anacom.pt, with the following information:

    Identification of the applicant

    • Name
    • Address
    • Contact telephone number
    • Email

    Characterisation of stations

    • Location

      - Address

      - Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) in WGS84
    • Antenna radiation diagram

      - If the radiation pattern is not omnidirectional, include azimuth and elevation angles
    • Effective antenna height
    • Gradient of antenna installation site
    • Radiated power

    Characterisation of emission

    • Central carrier frequencies
    • Bandwidths

    Network architecture

    • P-MP, P-P, Mesh or AP-MP
  3. 3
What are the technical conditions applicable to broadband fixed wireless access (BFWA) systems operating at 5.8 GHz?

The technical conditions applicable to BFWA systems operating in the 5.8 GHz band are identified in Recommendation ECC(06)04 https://docdb.cept.org/document/484 "Use of the band 5.725-5.875 MHz for broadband fixed wireless access (BFWA)" which identifies the following network architectures - Point-to-Multipoint (P-MP), Point-to-Point (P-P), Mesh and Any Point-to-Multipoint (AP-MP).

  4. 4
What is the standard certifying the compliance of BFWA equipment in 5.8 GHz under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED)?

BFWA  equipment must be compliant with the harmonised standard (ETSI EN 302 502), or equivalent standards under the Radio Equipment Directive (RED)https://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1305232, transposed to the internal legal system by Decree-Law 57/2017https://www.anacom.pt/render.jsp?contentId=1416519, published on 9 June, which establishes the arrangement for the provision in the market, operationalisation and use of radio equipment.
