"This list is a service document published by the ITU in pursuance of Article S20 of the Radio Regulations (1998 edition). Appendix S16 to these Regulations stipulates that all ship radiotelegraphy stations shall be provided with the list. The list is updated by means of quarterly supplements. It contains tables of general interest, including the international call sign series, blocks of ship station selective call numbers, blocks of coast station identification numbers and the maritime identification digits (MID) allocated to each country, as well as symbols and abbreviations used in the List."
